Ukiyo-e RE:BORN: a dive into the Edo period

Following the sold-out success of Monet: I Can See the Lights – An Immersive Journey, the Kadokawa Culture Museum in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, opens its doors to Ukiyo-e RE:BORN, a new immersive digital art theatre that brings the woodblock prints of Edo-period Japan into vivid, cinematic motion.

Created by KARMACHINA under the creative direction of Gianfranco Iannuzzi, the installation fills the museum’s 1,000-square-metre Grand Gallery with 33 high-luminosity projectors, wrapping walls and floor in a continuous flow of image and sound — an experience that sits somewhere between cinema and virtual reality, redefining the space as a shared digital stage.

Masterworks by Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro are reinterpreted across six thematic chapters, moving through landscapes, everyday life, the world of Kabuki theatre and Japanese mythology, all set to an original score that weaves Western strings together with traditional instruments such as the shakuhachi and koto.
