Ukiyo-e RE:BORN
#Art
Ukiyo-e RE:BORN is an immersive digital art theatre that invites audiences to rediscover the ukiyo-e tradition through sound, movement, and large-scale projections. Hosted at the Kadokawa Culture Museum, the exhibition offers a new way of engaging with Edo-period art, bridging historical heritage and contemporary visual culture in a deeply sensory experience. The creative direction is led by Gianfranco Iannuzzi, while the art direction and production of multimedia content are developed by KARMACHINA.
Set within the 1,000-square-metre Grand Gallery, the exhibition uses 33 high-luminosity projectors to animate walls and floors in real time. Images and sound envelop visitors in a continuous flow, creating an immersive environment that goes beyond cinema and virtual reality, redefining the space as a shared, dynamic digital art theatre.
The exhibition explores ukiyo-e as a popular and accessible visual language, depicting landscapes, everyday life, theatre and mythology. Works by masters such as Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro are reinterpreted across six thematic chapters, accompanied by an original soundtrack that blends Western strings with traditional Japanese instruments.
