Vincent’s irresistible passion

A journey into Vincent van Gogh’s universe of literary and artistic inspirations

On the occasion of the exhibition “Vincent van Gogh. Artist and Reader”, produced by 24 ORE Cultura – Gruppo 24 ORE at the Mudec in Milan and sponsored by the Municipality of Milan-Cultura, thanks to the collaboration with the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, we designed a video installation dedicated to the great Dutch artist.

The exhibition – curated by Francesco Poli with Mariella Guzzoni and Aurora Canepari – is enriched by a large immersive video projection: a composition of open books invites visitors to enter van Gogh’s mind and explore his universe of literary and artistic inspiration. An avid reader, tireless experimenter, in his short life he devoured hundreds of books, collected thousands of prints, but “the object in itself was not important to him… His library was stored in his head”.

The artist’s countless sources of inspiration – including books, illustrations, engravings – andhis works (drawings, preparatory sketches, details of paintings…) are brought to life, creating a constantly evolving flow of words and images. The scenarios were conceived in collaboration with Mariella Guzzoni and digitally animated by Luca Grazioli and Elisa Seravalli.

The story is guided by van Gogh’s thoughts, taken from his letters and read by Jonathan Lazzini.
The animations are accompanied by an original soundtrack, created for the occasion by the sound designer Alberto Modignani.
